Alex Brownsell and Fred Macpherson's Enchanting Wedding Journey
A Decade of Love: From Chance Encounter to Sacred Vows
The Unconventional Beginning of a Lasting Love Story
More than ten years ago, Alex Brownsell, co-founder and creative force behind Bleach London, crossed paths with Fred Appleby Macpherson, a talented songwriter and music producer, at a friend's birthday celebration. Their early courtship was characterized by casual encounters in their shared social circles, leading to a memorable McDonald's outing where Fred's oversight in not offering to pay for Alex's Happy Meal became a cherished anecdote. Their engagement took a delightful, albeit precarious, turn on New Year's Eve 2019, high on a Bulgarian ski lift, where Fred's proposal nearly resulted in a lost ring, adding a touch of playful drama to their journey.
Overcoming Obstacles: A Wedding Delayed, A Family United
Initially set for 2020, the couple's wedding plans were disrupted by the global pandemic. The unforeseen delay stretched to five years, during which they expanded their family with two children. Eventually, they set a new date for September 6, 2025. For the creative and aesthetic direction of their special day, they enlisted the expertise of Abi Ford for design and florals, with additional horticultural support from Jake Tulley, their gardener. Good Times Collective was brought in to manage the creative production. While Westminster Abbey's Henry VII Lady Chapel was chosen for the ceremony, finding a suitable reception venue posed a challenge until the discovery of the Columbia Hotel. Alex lauded the hotel's unique, slightly cinematic ambiance and its steadfast family ownership, appreciating its untouched historical charm over modern renovations, and commending the exceptional hospitality provided by Sophie Fresco and her team.
A Bride's Vision: Harmonizing History with Personal Style
Alex's quest for the perfect wedding gown was deeply influenced by the historical context and color scheme of Westminster Abbey. She was captivated by an Edwardian gold lace gown featuring green accents from Jane Bourvis, which immediately resonated with her upon trying it on. This initial choice freed her to explore more playful and experimental styles for her subsequent party looks. Her second ensemble was a reimagined 1980s ivory silk dress sourced from an Etsy seller in Canada, while her third was a bespoke latex creation by Poster Girl, designed by friends Francesca Cappa and Natasha Somerville. Each dress was paired with distinct footwear: Manolo Blahniks for her first look, 2010 Marc Jacobs for the second, and vintage transparent Margiela heels from Aro Archive for her final transformation.
Adornments of Affection: Sentimental Jewelry and Bridal Beauty Preparations
Her selection of jewelry was a heartfelt amalgamation of personal gifts and borrowed pieces, imbuing each item with significant meaning. A beautiful wedding band from Dominic Jones's 886 by The Royal Mint was a thoughtful present, while a stunning diamond necklace, earrings, and bracelet from his new bridal collection, symbolizing tears of joy, were loaned. Her maid of honor and close friend, Georgia May Jagger, lent a ruby necklace and crucifix earrings, fulfilling the tradition of "something borrowed" for the ceremony. Alex's pre-wedding beauty regimen commenced a year in advance, involving regular microneedling and high-intensity focused ultrasound treatments with facialist Teresa Tarmey, alongside polynucleotide injections by Karen Doherty. For her makeup, she entrusted her friend Isamaya Ffrench, who skillfully concealed her tattoo sleeve for the church service, later revealing it for the reception. Isamaya achieved a simple yet ethereal look by layering Skinlacq under Alex's base for an iridescent, dewy finish, aiming to reflect the chapel's mystical quality. Lauren Michelle Pires meticulously crafted her nails, incorporating tiny pearls in an "F" shape on her ring finger as a tribute to Fred.
