Balenciaga Honors Demna's Decade of Visionary Design with Paris Retrospective
Balenciaga is currently hosting a remarkable exhibition in Paris, titled “Balenciaga by Demna,” dedicated to the impactful ten-year tenure of its creative director, Demna Gvasalia. This curated showcase, set within Kering’s Parisian headquarters, serves as both a commemorative event for Demna's departure and a comprehensive overview of his significant contributions to the fashion house from 2015 to 2025. Featuring 101 selected works from 30 distinct collections, the exhibition meticulously highlights the core conceptual and aesthetic principles that have characterized Balenciaga under Demna's artistic direction, including his innovative approaches to volume, proportion, and the reinterpretation of classic design elements.
The presentation innovatively blurs the boundaries between traditional fashion archives and modern art installations. Garments are displayed using a variety of methods, from custom mounts and lifelike mannequins to dry cleaner-style hangers, creating a dynamic visual experience. A unique audio guide, narrated by Demna himself, offers visitors personal insights into the creative genesis of some of the brand’s most iconic and conversation-sparking designs. Furthermore, the exhibition integrates collaborative artworks, such as a life-sized sculpture by Mark Jenkins reinterpreting a look from the Summer 22 collection, and kinetic pieces by Andrew J. Greene that incorporate Balenciaga accessories, extending the artistic dialogue beyond mere display.
This exhibition not only celebrates Demna's profound influence on Balenciaga but also underscores the brand's commitment to artistic expression and historical reflection. By providing public access to such a comprehensive display of creativity and innovation, Balenciaga reinforces its position as a cultural touchstone in the luxury fashion world. This retrospective not only honors past achievements but also inspires a forward-looking perspective on how fashion can continue to evolve as a powerful medium of artistic and cultural commentary.
