Bath & Body Works Expands Reach to University Bookstores
Bath & Body Works is embarking on a significant strategic expansion, bringing its popular range of personal care items to over 600 college bookstores across the United States. This innovative move, set to roll out in August, represents the brand's first foray into a widespread retail presence outside its dedicated stores and duty-free outlets. By targeting university campuses, Bath & Body Works aims to solidify its connection with the highly influential Gen Z demographic, a customer segment already demonstrating strong loyalty to the brand's offerings.
In the coming weeks, as students prepare for the new academic year, campus bookstores nationwide will begin stocking an array of Bath & Body Works products. This initiative stems from successful pilot programs conducted in college bookstores during the spring, leading to a partnership with the distribution firm ICM. The participating institutions span a diverse range of educational environments, from major universities like the University of Florida and Boston College to Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Ivy League schools, and community colleges.
Betsy Schumacher, the chief merchandising officer at Bath & Body Works, emphasized the strategic importance of reaching this specific consumer group. The product selection for these new campus displays will be carefully curated to appeal to young adults, featuring items such as plug-in room diffusers—ideal for dormitories where candles are often prohibited—and convenient pocket-sized hand sanitizers. These products will be available in some of the brand's most beloved fragrances, including Japanese Cherry Blossom and Warm Vanilla Sugar.
This venture by Bath & Body Works differs from previous brand activations seen on college campuses. While companies like Maybelline, Glossier, and Urban Outfitters have engaged student populations through temporary on-site events, Bath & Body Works' presence in college bookstores is designed to be a permanent fixture. Schumacher highlighted the importance of this sustained availability, noting that the brand's business model relies on replenishment, ensuring customers can consistently repurchase their favorite scents. The company also anticipates introducing seasonal product offerings in the spring.
The timing of Bath & Body Works' entry into college bookstores is particularly opportune, as these retail spaces are undergoing a significant transformation. With the increasing adoption of digital learning platforms, the demand for physical textbooks has considerably declined. A September 2024 report by Bay View Analytics revealed a sharp drop in courses requiring only physical textbooks, from 19% in the 2021-2022 academic year to just 8% in the 2023-2024 academic year. This shift has created ample shelf space for new product categories.
Schumacher observed that college bookstores are evolving into vibrant community hubs for young consumers, places where they can socialize, browse, and discover exciting new products. This changing dynamic provides an ideal environment for Bath & Body Works to engage with its target audience. The brand's strong appeal to American teens has been consistently demonstrated by Piper Sandler's semiannual Taking Stock with Teens survey, which has repeatedly identified Bath & Body Works as a leading fragrance brand among teenagers, and a top beauty destination for teen girls.
While the affordable fragrance and body-care market has seen increased competition from brands like Sol de Janeiro and Phlur, Bath & Body Works has actively explored new retail formats to connect with Gen Z shoppers both online and offline. The company launched on TikTok Shop last fall and, in March, introduced its Gingham+ store design, which features wider aisles and interactive fragrance displays to enhance the in-store experience. For now, the bookstore displays will focus on core product lines, but the brand views this expansion as a continuous learning process. Bath & Body Works is eager to monitor customer reactions to determine future product offerings and refine its approach to this new retail channel.
