Dubai Municipality Intensifies Cosmetic Safety with Banned Chemical Screening
Elevating Beauty Standards: Dubai's Proactive Stance on Cosmetic Safety
Dubai Central Laboratory Introduces Advanced Screening Protocol
The Central Laboratory of Dubai Municipality has recently rolled out specialized testing procedures aimed at identifying trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO). This chemical compound, known as a photoinitiator, is commonly found in gel nail polishes, where it plays a crucial role in the curing process under ultraviolet light.
The European Union's Ban and Global Safety Alignment
The European Union has officially restricted the use of TPO, effective from September 1, 2025, following its classification as a substance harmful to reproduction. In response to this, Dubai's enhanced testing capabilities enable thorough scrutiny of cosmetic products entering and manufactured within its borders, ensuring they meet rigorous international safety benchmarks.
Reinforcing Consumer Protection in the Cosmetics Sector
By adopting these new testing measures, Dubai is actively harmonizing its regulatory framework for cosmetics with the EU's directives. This strategic initiative not only safeguards public health but also strengthens consumer confidence in one of the Middle East's most vibrant and expanding beauty markets.
