L'Oréal Recalls Effaclar Duo Acne Cream Due to Benzene Contamination
L’Oréal is recalling all lots of its Effaclar Duo acne cream in the U.S. due to potential benzene contamination, following an independent lab's alert about benzene in benzoyl peroxide-based products over the past year. Effaclar Duo, marketed under La Roche-Posay, contains benzoyl peroxide, which helps combat acne. Trace amounts of benzene were detected in one lot, leading L’Oréal, in consultation with the FDA, to withdraw the product. An updated formulation has been in development since 2024 and will soon replace the recalled product. This recall underscores growing consumer and regulatory concerns about benzene exposure in personal care items, as highlighted by Valisure’s detection of the carcinogen in various products over the last four years.
