Luxury Fashion Embraces Sustainability: A Growing Trend
According to Mastercard's Economics Institute, sustainability is increasingly influencing the luxury fashion market, with circular fashion gaining prominence. In 2024, upcycled clothing accounted for 27.4% of U.S. online luxury spending, marking a significant rise from pre-pandemic levels. Analysts predict this trend will continue, projecting that by the end of 2025, 28.8% of U.S. online apparel spending will be on luxury secondhand goods. This shift coincides with a slowdown in luxury revenue, driving value-conscious consumers towards resale platforms. Seasonal trends, such as the spring closet refresh, also boost secondhand luxury sales, particularly in March. Cities like Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Portland lead in circular fashion adoption, driven by environmentally-conscious and budget-oriented consumers exploring platforms like Mytheresa and Farfetch.
