Suave Leverages Yuka App for New Derm-Inspired Body Care Line at Walmart

Suave, a long-standing American personal care brand, is strategically capitalizing on the increasing influence of product safety applications like Yuka to bolster its in-store presence at major retailers such as Walmart and Target. This initiative follows a successful relaunch in February, marking a pivotal moment for the brand as it introduces its first dermatologist-inspired body care collection. The move is designed to resonate with a new wave of value-conscious shoppers who are increasingly discerning about the ingredients in their personal care products, actively seeking out formulations free from undesirable components. This approach demonstrates Suave's commitment to adapting to evolving consumer preferences and leveraging technological advancements in retail.

Rafael Lopes, Suave's Vice President of Innovation and Brand Equity, emphasizes that the brand's new product development is meticulously crafted to align with the positive outcomes displayed on product safety scanning applications and online search trends. Lopes notes a significant shift in consumer behavior, where AI-driven apps have become integral to routine shopping trips, both in physical stores and online. Yuka, initially launched in France in 2017 to help shoppers understand the health impact of food products, has since expanded to encompass personal care ratings, experiencing substantial growth with millions of new users in the past year. This widespread adoption of such apps underscores their power in shaping purchasing decisions, making a favorable Yuka score a valuable asset for brands.

The impact of a strong Yuka rating on sales is evident, as highlighted by Lopes. He points to the success of Suave's Dry Shampoo launch in February, where strong sales were partially attributed to its impressive score of 76 out of 100 on the app – a remarkable achievement for a product at its price point. Lopes also identifies a significant gap in the mass body care market: consumers are increasingly drawn to derm-inspired skincare, prioritizing specific skin needs and active ingredients, but often find themselves priced out of prestige options. This insight led Suave to develop its Advanced Skin Solution body care line, offering accessible, high-quality solutions for a variety of skin concerns.

Responding to this market demand, Suave's new Advanced Skin Solution body care line, available at Walmart, includes five distinct body moisturizers, each priced under $6. These products are formulated to address specific needs such as sensitive, dull, dry, extra-dry, and normal skin. Lopes proudly states that each formula is rigorously tested by dermatologists, free from common allergens, parabens, and dyes, and is cruelty-free. This collection represents a significant step for a value brand, offering sophisticated ingredients like prebiotics and ceramides, typically found in higher-priced products, to a broader audience. This strategic move aims to democratize access to advanced skin care benefits, catering to a market where ingredient transparency and efficacy are paramount.

The broader market trends further support Suave's strategy. While prestige beauty industry sales remained stagnant year-over-year in the first quarter, the mass market experienced a 3% increase, with a 4% growth to $34.6 billion in the first half of the year, compared to a 2% increase in prestige sales. This indicates a clear shift towards value and accessibility in the beauty sector. Lopes actively incorporates scanning app scores into the formulation process, avoiding ingredients that might negatively impact ratings. Furthermore, Suave has partnered with Yuka to proactively predict product scores before launch, a free service that is gaining traction among cosmetic brands looking to enhance their ratings.

This consumer-driven shift is also reshaping the physical retail landscape. Lopes observes that retailers like Walmart and Target are reconfiguring their store layouts to better accommodate the way shoppers interact with products using scanning apps. This includes reorganizing shelves based on routine order and other methods that mirror consumer scanning patterns. The strong performance of Suave's U.S. and Canada business, acquired by Yellow Wood Partners in 2023, with annual retail sales reaching approximately $700 million across various major retailers, underscores the brand's significant market presence and its ability to adapt to evolving consumer behaviors and technological advancements in the retail space.
