French Health Agency Urges Caution on Glyoxylic Acid in Hair Straightening Products
The French Agency for Food, Environmental, and Occupational Health Safety (ANSES) has advised against using hair straightening products containing glyoxylic acid due to reports of severe adverse reactions, including acute renal failure. ANSES considers it "very highly probable" that glyoxylic acid, which can transform into calcium oxalate crystals in the bloodstream, is responsible for these health issues. The agency urges a European-level risk assessment to limit or prohibit its use, noting that some products may release formaldehyde during heating. Glyoxylic acid has been banned in Israel since 2022, following 26 reported cases of severe renal failure linked to its use. ANSES calls for marketers to review product safety, while the European Commission will consult the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety for further regulatory action.
Revolutionizing Sustainable Packaging: Niugreen's Eco-Friendly Bottle Reuse Initiative
Marie Devaux, CEO of BRC, is spearheading environmentally friendly packaging solutions. Initially specializing in flexible refills for liquids and powders, BRC now focuses on reusing glass bottles containing alcohol-based products like essential oils and perfumes through the Niugreen project. This initiative aims to reduce the environmental footprint of cosmetic products by cleaning and deodorizing glass bottles without water, using supercritical CO2 technology developed with École des Mines d'Albi. The process cleans 4000 bottles per hour, employs CO2 from organic waste methanization, and recirculates it within the system. Compared to recycling, this method reduces CO2 emissions by 72% for a 150 ml bottle. Niugreen also supports social inclusion by partnering with APAJH for bottle preparation. Currently in testing, the project plans industrial-scale operations by September 2026.
