US Open Redefines Fan Engagement Amidst Soaring Popularity

In an evolving landscape where tennis fandom is experiencing a significant surge, the U.S. Open and its associated commercial entities are increasingly reorienting their marketing and experiential strategies. The traditional emphasis on star players is broadening to encompass a more inclusive approach that champions the audience. This new direction seeks to captivate not only dedicated tennis enthusiasts but also those drawn to the cultural and social elements surrounding the high-profile tournament, marking a notable shift in how major sporting events cultivate their community.

Historically, the U.S. Open has been a magnet for commercial ventures, eager to leverage the charisma of top tennis figures. However, with spectator numbers consistently on the rise, a fresh wave of initiatives and brand activations is emerging. These efforts are deliberately designed to place the spotlight on the fans themselves, whether their primary interest lies in the athletic competition or in the vibrant atmosphere. This strategic evolution signifies a deeper understanding of audience diversification and engagement.

A prime illustration of this fan-centric approach comes from Dove, making its debut as an official U.S. Open collaborator. The body care brand partnered with prominent social media personality Estefania Pessoa, known as Tefi, to launch a competition across her extensive TikTok and Instagram platforms. The contest offered followers the unique opportunity to serve as Dove’s “official underarm correspondent” during the U.S. Open. From a pool of over one hundred submissions, New Yorker Flora Manon was selected, tasked with generating digital content for the brand while attending the tournament’s singles championships. Dana Paolucci, Dove’s head of PR and influence, highlighted that this social media initiative garnered over 22,000 interactions, and the company distributed more than 100,000 mini deodorant samples at its Flushing Meadows booth. Paolucci further noted that social media has played a crucial role in making tennis more accessible and exciting, even for those unable to attend in person, by fostering stronger connections with athletes and their narratives.

Other sponsoring partners at the U.S. Open are also embracing creative fan engagement. Dobel, a tequila producer, aims to entice attendees with more than just beverages, offering opportunities for social connection. Through a collaboration with the U.S. Open, Dobel launched “Game, Set, Matchmaker,” a dating program hosted by figure skater and influencer Ilana Sedaka. This show arranges blind dates for fans, with segments scheduled to air on the U.S. Open’s YouTube channel throughout the 2025 competition. These ventures underscore a broadening appeal of tennis, attracting individuals who follow not only the sport but also its fashion and lifestyle components. The visibility of figures such as Morgan Riddle, girlfriend of American tennis player Taylor Fritz, and Paige Lorenze, who recently announced her engagement to fellow American player Tommy Paul, has amplified this trend in recent years. This heightened public awareness contributed to the 2024 U.S. Open achieving a historic milestone: surpassing one million attendees for the first time in the tournament’s history.

The increasing emphasis on audience-focused programs also coincides with a period where the cost of collaborating with professional influencers has escalated, as full-time content creators command higher fees. Erin Ally, VP at influencer and creator agency Bobbie, commented that this shift towards fan-centric activations largely stems from brands’ desire to cultivate a devoted and enthusiastic consumer base. She explained that while working with athletes is one way to capture attention, directly engaging fans in a manner that resonates with their enjoyment of the event can forge a more enduring brand impression. For the 2025 tournament, the U.S. Open has also explored novel methods to draw attendees, notably by enhancing its Fan Week. This complimentary week, which marks the start of each tournament, traditionally featured only qualifying matches. However, this year, it expanded to include the Mixed Doubles tournament, drawing prominent players like Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu to the courts ahead of the main singles championships. This expanded format proved highly successful, with a record 239,307 guests attending the 2025 Fan Week.

Despite the growing popularity, the increased attention on tennis has brought some drawbacks for longtime fans. Ticket prices for the U.S. Open have risen significantly, from $69 for an entry-level ticket in 2015 to $169 for a grounds pass in 2025. Some attendees have also voiced concerns that the atmosphere now seems more geared towards influencers than the athletic competition itself. Beyond the courts, certain off-site gatherings prioritize the fashionable aspects of tennis over a deep understanding of the sport. Kérastase, in conjunction with the meme account Overheard, hosted a cocktail event to promote the hair-care brand’s Gloss Absolu Glaze Drops. This gathering allowed attendees to watch the Open if they wished, with cocktail napkins playfully stating, “It’s that time of year again where I pretend to care about sports.” Kérastase reported that the 100-person event quickly reached its RSVP limit within 24 hours, and its U.S.-focused social content from paid creators has garnered five million views.

At Flushing Meadows, many spectators are drawn as much by the culinary and beverage offerings as by the matches. The 2024 U.S. Open saw sales of over half a million Grey Goose-sponsored Honeydeuce cocktails, priced at $23 each, which have become a ubiquitous feature on social media for tournamentgoers. For those unable to physically attend, the U.S. Open experience extends beyond the venue; aspiring fans can enjoy a Honeydeuce cocktail at off-site locations such as a Grey Goose pop-up at Grand Central Terminal or at Ray’s bar in the Lower East Side. For some, this alternative experience provides a satisfactory connection to the tournament itself.

The tournament’s strategic shift reflects a broader trend in sports and entertainment, where fan engagement is paramount. By diversifying experiences and collaborating with brands that resonate with contemporary cultural interests, the US Open is successfully broadening its appeal and securing its place as a significant cultural event, not just a sporting spectacle. This evolution, while presenting new challenges, ultimately aims to cultivate a more expansive and dedicated community around the sport.
